Women Having Babies for Others

Abstract:

Debra Rakar, M. Newbegin, Joseph A. Walsh, M.D., Amy Kaplan, and Diane Weintraub Pohl respond to “The Curious Lives of Surrogates,” which appeared in the April 7 issue. Rakar points out that the wealthy can rent a military wife's womb with government assistance in the form of health care provided to the surrogate, but that the woman's deployed husband is not entitled to a government-financed education; Newbegin criticizes the use of the military's medical budget to fund surrogate babies; Walsh argues that regulation of surrogate motherhood is needed; Kaplan highlights the scarcity of health-insurance policies that cover surrogate pregnancies; Weintraub Pohl praises the strength and tenacity of surrogate mothers.
